Pocket Correction Therapy

Your bone and gum tissue should fit snugly around your teeth like a turtleneck around your neck.  When you have periodontal disease, this supporting tissue and bone is destroyed, forming "pockets" around the teeth.

Over time, these pockets become deeper, providing a larger space for bacteria to live.  As these deep pockets collect even more bacteria, it results in further bone and tissue loss.  Deeper pockets make it more difficult for you and your dental care professional to clean, so it's important for you to reduce them.

Pocket correction therapy works to reduce pocket depths and eliminate existing bacteria in order to prevent damage caused by the progression of periodontal disease.  During this procedure, the gum tissue is folded back, allowing for the removal of plaque, tartar and disease-causing bacteria.  The diseased tissue will be trimmed away and any irregular surfaces of damaged bone are re-contoured to eliminate any areas that disease-causing bacteria can hide.  This will help the tissue to better reattach to healthy bone.  The gum tissue will then be secured to a new position that will be easier for you to clean at home on a daily basis.
